The Final Flight

NASA Space Shuttle -- Final Flight

July 8 2011 will go down in history as the launch of the final flight of the NASA Space Shuttle Program.  At 11:26 a.m. ET on Friday -- Atlantis STS-135 took the final leap into the skies.  The last blast for this iconic 30-year space program.  Atlantis docked with the International Space Station on Sunday, delivering supplies, part of a 12-day mission.

Shuttle Final Voyage - Space Program Retirement

Space Shuttle Discovery - STS-133 launched on February 24, 2011 for its final voyage.  This is the beginning to the end of the Shuttle Era.  On April 2011 -- Launch Pad 39A: Kennedy Space Center ( Merritt Island, Florida ), Space Shuttle Endeavor ( STS-134 ) is scheduled for launch, on what could be the 134th and final shuttle program flight. The iconic NASA space shuttle program began in 1981.

"The Space Shuttle is the world's first reusable spacecraft, and the first spacecraft in history that can carry large satellites both to and from orbit. The Shuttle launches like a rocket, maneuvers in Earth orbit like a spacecraft and lands like an airplane. Each of the three Space Shuttle orbiters now in operation -- Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour -- is designed to fly at least 100 missions. So far, altogether they have flown a combined total of less than one-fourth of that. " - NASA website.
